A tower of my own

I seem to keep on finding inspiration in ‘castley‘ structures such as this one.

Maison L – French Site & inhabitat.com – a French house that is a grandly and imaginatively extended 18th century orangery. Whilst I find the interiors industrial and cold, yet beguiling in the scarcity of furnishings and in their sense of space and openness, what really attracts is the allocation of space to family members…

“Each member of the family has their own tower…”

…Ohh to have a tower of my own…

Flat roof / living roof / green roof

I must admit to a growing attraction to living roofs (or green roofs as they now become under the green-wash that splatters onto even legitimately green solutions).

…I’ve taken to snapping pictures or starring intently whenever I see one of them. Think I may have decided on my roof…

Horizontals

I recently stayed in a lovely chalet on an estuary in Brittany. It was basically a log cabin, but well disguised as something far more sophisticated. It was built in the late 60′s with some great design features such as these wide horizontal windows that give an irresistible framed letter box view of the landscape beyond and a wider perspective than more traditional rectangular, taller and narrower windows. These windows also provide more space for storage above them, such as the kitchen cupboards in this shot.

Sorry about the poor quality of the picture, it was snapped in a hurry.

Horizontal windows – capture the landscape!

Tiny apartment

I would love to have the discipline required to live in a place like this ’11-feet-3-inches wide, by 16-feet-2-inches deep, by 10-feet-4-inches tall’ apartment built by Steve Sauer in Seattle.

I love the effective use of space, the lack of waste, the optimisation and functionality.

I must admit I think I’d struggle to maintain order in such a place. I’m untidy and a bit of a hoarder. I can rarely dispose of anything without considering every possible, however unlikely, potential future use. Even when there’s no reason to keep a thing, I’ll probably stash it ‘just in case’.

There’s also the storage of legitimate objects with a genuine future use to consider – wine that needs aging, photographs for reflection and books that you can’t or won’t buy as an eBook. The lack of space to store such things could be frustrating – although I guess the type of people able to live comfortably (both physically and mentally) in this limited a space may not care for such things (or at least reject them more easily than I could).

Having said that, I don’t see why this ethos, to optimise the effective use of functional space, couldn’t be applied to my place of my own. After all, I’ve got other locations to store my hoard of objects with a potential future use.

Cabin in British Columbia

Not that I want to live or even sleep in my place (well perhaps the occasional snooze) but I think that this weekend cabin on Gambier Island, British Columbia, Canada is a smasher

Small, functional and well designed – three attributes I want for my place of my own…

I love the simple, uncensored and unapologetic exposed materials and structure and the functional effective use of every inch of space. I also really like the front elevation with the raised deck – I’ve realised that I have a bit of a thing for raised platforms and ladders – perhaps I should build a tree house.

Not so keen on those tatty, drafty looking windows (too many cold, damp Welsh winters to be attracted to anything that’s not virtually air tight and at least double glazed) and the bathroom facilities seem a little sparse…
